”Urban Struggles in Mediterranean Cities” International Un/Conference

Burcu Tüm, one of the cofounder of Mahal Architects, has realized a workshop titled ‘Hunting Guerillas Based on the Morphology’ at the’Urban Struggles in the Mediterranean Cities’ unconference in Athens from 31 May to 3 June 2018.

Historical Voids in Urban Area and Evaluation of Divanyolu Case

Simge Balcı, one of the cofounder of Mahal Architects, published the MSc. thesis from Restoration Program of Yıldız Technical University with the adviser Prof. Dr. M. Cengiz CAN on december 2017.

In this study, the conservation of the urban voids in historical areas is investigated; the definition of the urban void and its formations, classification and conservation problems are discussed. The value of voids which is as an excluded area from conservation discipline until recently is explained and their important role in the historical and cultural sustainability of the city is emphasized. The examinations of Divanyolu and its surroundings are the scope of this thesis.

Gender and City-Space Symposium

Burcu Tüm who is one of the cofounders of Mahal Architects presented the submission entitled ‘Women’s Public Place Reclaiming : the example ‘Collect Your Legs’ at the ‘Gender and City-Space’ Symposium organized by TMMOB Chamber of City Planners Women Commission.

The Methamorphose of Ayazma

L’ayazma est historiquement une source sanctuarisée, réputée pour ses propriétés thérapeutiques et bienfaisantes. C’est autour d’une de ces sources que s’est progressivement construit le quartier d’Ayazma, dans l’arrondissement de Küçükçekmece, en périphérie d’İstanbul. Contrairement à sa réputation originelle, ses eaux y sont devenues poison, conséquence d’un mode de développement urbain dénégateur. Son histoire est emblématique des bouleversements plus généraux qui ont affecté en quelques années la ville d’Istanbul, celle de l’altération irréversible d’un milieu et de ses ressources. Cette exposition photographique vous propose de replonger dans l’atmosphère de ce quartier et de mieux comprendre les enjeux qui s’y jouent à l’échelle locale comme dans tant d’autres franges urbaines.
